Exam One
WGS 225 Gender, Race & Work
Spring 2006

I will select one out these three questions for your in-class
exam. You will write your exam in class in blue books provided
for you in class. You can use the entire book to finish your
answer. Draw from all readings, class discussions and the
movie to answer your question. You may bring an outline or
notes to your exam—but no texts/articles.

1. In class we have looked at various kinds of
migrations: forced and voluntary; within the US and from
outside of the US; and thus different experiences of work and
labor. Select 3 such migrations, compare and contrast them and
show how they introduced and/or incorporated patriarchal
ideas/practices and shaped different gender identities.

2. Identify Alice Kessler-Harris’s key argument. How does
she support it? To what extent is she satisfied with the
outcome of the Bill? What kinds of historical influences
created a situation where “equal pay for equal work” didn’t
exist in the US?

3. Colonialism takes various forms. Discuss how this is so.
How did colonialism also create a system of gender civilizing,
sexual division of labor, and gender neutrality? In particular
compare and contrast the impact on Native and Black
communities.

ADVICE:
You cannot summarize all of the material. What is required is
an individual process of organizing and synthesizing some of
the ideas discussed so far in a logical manner.

Write an introductory paragraph that sets out your intentions
and the argument(s) you are making or addressing. Outline the
points you will be making (that way you won’t be overwhelmed
with details) and build on your outline as you write.

Any important ideas or concepts (such as “cult of
domesticity”) should be fully defined after they are
introduced. Pull in reading material to define, elaborate on
and illustrate each important idea. So use good examples.

You can critique author(s) as part of your argument, so be
clear and provide evidence.

Do not use long quotes. Paraphrase.

Give credit where credit is due. That is cite and do not cheat—
so include after your sentences (Amott & Matthaei, 83).

Do not use article or book titles on the body of the paper.

I absolutely love Alan Tudyk. I absolutely love him. He is so adorable. I just watched him in A Knight's Tale for the first time in a long while and I couldn't stop laughing. He is acting 100 percent of the time. Not that I mean that hes not that funny in real life, I'm sure he is, but every expression, every move, every mumble is perfectly done. Even when its not about him you have to watch him.

Pirate Day-Last weekend a group of friends and I had Pirate Day where we watched all of the Pirate movies we could get a hold of (and had enough time for). It Included POTC Muppet Treasure Island and Goonies(never ever to be confused with Newsies). All good Pirate movies. We were trying to track down copies of Hook and or Peter Pan on DVD but couldn't find any.

Star treks Night- My friend Becky was so kind as to let me sit in on a viewing of star treks movies. I'm not entirely sure what ones but one had Christian Salter and The guy from Sound of Music as well as Tom Robinson from To Kill a Mockingbird. The other was a mixing of old and new. It had Woppie in it which was cool but weird. I liked that one. It brought up some interesting questions. Also we decided that we love Data the angsty android and his life forms song.

Sunday-Sunday we watched Moulin Rouge and My friend Eric loved it. I love watching people watch movies for the first time, especially the good ones, it's just so much fun to watch proples reactions. I hope that doesn't make me a sadist. Later I went to see Aeon Flux. It was alright, I liked it. It had a Logans Run/ The Island feel to it. It was long but want quickly, if you know what I mean. There was no real dialogue but had to be said and each thing happened fast and went into the next thing. I'm not sure weather that is a good thing or a bad thing. I loked the cast though. Frances McDormand was great in her smallish role and so was Pete Postlethwaite. All in all not a terrible waste of time. Beware Movie snobs you will be disappointed.

The notebook- yes I finally gave in and watched it. I had just been telling a close friend of mine that you cant be a movie snob and just not see a movie because you think it will be bad, or make fun of a film based on critics reviews. So when I saw that my roommate had the notebook and every girl ( And one boy) I know raves about it I thought I'd give it a chance. Here's what I think. So sweet, it had a sweet storyline, a sweet romance, and a sweet flashback thing going on. But what I didn't like was the ending Spoiler free. Yes it had to happen that way but when you get to the end it just makes the whole thing so unbelievable that you loose your focus on the movie and go "hey, what the heck. When do things ever happen like that". I am usually a firm believer that in the fact that Hollywood likes to make most mainstream films a happy ending and will do anything to get it. I don't really have a set emotion of this films ending after a first viewing but perhaps after another viewing I may have a better idea about what I really feel.

Top five favorite movies of all time.
All about Eve, classic Bette Davis. Perfect cast excellent writing with smart little jibes thrown in, and to top it all off backstage life of theatre folk, it cant get much better.
Princess Bride- If you haven't seen this go out and rent it now. If you have seen it go back to it and give it another chance, it will be worth it. Direction is great, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright Penn were perfect together(Wesley and Buttercup forever) and the rest of the cast were hilarious. Andre the giant as the rhyming fezzik and Mandy Patinkin as Indigo Montoya who's father was killed by the six fingered man aka Count Rugen aka Christopher guest. With cameos and the like done by Billy crystal and carol Kane and a script that never gets old this is definitely one of the greats.
Reality Bites- Winona Ryder at her greatest. Now I am not much of a Ben stiller fan but I have to admit that this was a big accomplishment on his part for both acting and directing. However it as such a great ensemble story that you have to love all of the characters. And we cant forget the love triangle that is so predictable but so... I don't know... So right we yearn for it by the end. It is also a testament to the 90s and captures generation X so well even before they were called generation X.
Tootsie- Not much else to say but that it is one of the all time greats and each and every one of you should go and see it. It is so good that the only way to watch it is over and over again until you know each and every word so you can quote it on a regular basis.
Almost Famous- Great cast, direction, script, and music. It is a great movie with lines like Can you believe these new girls? None of them use birth control and they eat all the steak! and This is a house of lies and of course I Am a golden god.

My name is Alyssa and I go to Ohio Wesleyan University. Um... I absolutely LOVE movies; they are what make my world go round. I believe that people's lives can be bettered by the right movie and scarred by the wrong one.
I can respect all movies for what they are and what they stand for. I even believe that the not so good movies have at least one somewhat redeeming quality. For example, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton, although it had a terrible plot, unbelievable story lines, and just didn't keep our interest long enough to get attached to the characters or even the dog, did have a great soundtrack and musical score.
I apoligize for everything I write that will hurt peoples feelings or insult their favorite movie, but these are my opinions and I stand by them.
